The Group Interaction, Inc. Newsletter June 1999

Fridays at Interaction

June Is "People's Choice" Month

June brings back some of our Friday favorites. The fishbowl is our most requested discussion group, where participants present topics to be candidly discussed by "the other sex". Bring your questions (and a sense of humor) on June 18th.

Larry Saldivar has rapidly become our most requested presenter. The high energy dance instructor will return on June 25th to bring us to our feet with a Latin beat. Alumni are invited to this special event.

Looking far ahead to July 30th, the Ladies Book Group will feature "At home In Mitford" by Jan Karon. (See the article in this newsletter for more information about this group.)

Your Core Group Retreats And Trains

Interaction thrives as an all-volunteer organization thanks to the Core Group - all the individuals who serve on the various committees to do the work. To aid the cohesiveness of this team of diverse individuals, IA provides training several times each year. We do this "off-site" to keep people focused on the task at hand and for better opportunity to build team rapport.

Due to scheduling changes, IA had two such retreats in May. First, the discussion group facilitators spent a weekend of training in Whitewater State Park (south of Richmond IN) with Randy Buerkle of Flagship Consulting. Randy is a professional organizational psychologist. We explored discussion group dynamics, personality differences, and creative activities to aid discussion group members to know each other better. Randy had previously taught a public speaking seminar for IA and he again packed a lot of ideas into his sessions.

Then the core group "retreated" to Shawnee State Park at the southern tip of Ohio for team building and business. The weekend began with a well-attended board meeting. Then past IA Director Dora Lawson led the group in challenging and fun team-building games. Finally, Helena Gerrard led the group in exploring "first impressions", helping us to better see how we may appear to first-timers on a Friday evening. Helena earns her living doing team building with companies, and she has done several productive training sessions with IA over the past couple years.

For both weekends, the weather was perfect. The "work" sessions were held outside with scenic nature all around. Your volunteers left with improved spirits and a renewed commitment to making IA a gratifying experience for all every Friday night.

Chicken Soup Group

Would you like to occasionally be a part of a discussion group that is facilitated, but the discussion topics come from the interests members that of the night? Where members would share from their hearts mostly and not always their heads, and you could bring up an idea you'd like to hear other single adults perspectives of in a gentle and respectful way. Or maybe you have no specific concerns, but would like to show support for fellow singles in a caring way. You may find the Chicken Soup group just the place to be on the first Friday of each month. Memorial Day Picnic A Huge Success

All who attended the IA Memorial Day Picnic on Sunday May 31st appeared to really have a good time. Judging from the crowd, and it was a huge one (this was the best attended IA picnic in quite awhile with over 150 people) everyone enjoyed the food, the companionship, the music, the games, the sun and the warm breezes.

A lot of hard work and time was put in by the social committee and people who volunteered to help make this day truly a pleasurable experience. All in attendance owe Dora Lawson and her crew and all the volunteers who lent a hand in helping out a really big thank you. So if you had a good time at the picnic and see someone who either works on the Social Committee, or someone who you know helped out that day, stop and tell them thanks, let them know you appreciate the time and work they provided to make the picnic fun.

Women's Group - Simple Abundance

I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June" - L. M. Montgomery.  June is generous with authentic gifts.   This month on the Simple Abundance path, realizing the transformative power of the third principle - Order. This month we rediscover that it is life's enrichments rather than the riches of life that bring us true contentment.

The Simple Abundance group for women is based On Sarah Ban Breathnach's book. This book outlines the six principles of Gratitude, Simplicity, Order, Harmony, Beauty and Joy as well as gives invaluable wisdom for quality of everyday living. This is a monthly women's group, however, you need not have attended the previous groups to join in.

Ladies Book Club

Attention all ladies who have always wanted to participate in a book club. We had a great discussion during our last meeting on April 30th. Our next book club meeting will be on July 30th and the current book we are reading is "At Home In Mitford" (Penguin Books, $12.95), by Jan Karon. This book was suggested by Toni Bailey and is the first in a series of five books. Toni feels these are the best books that she has ever read and that they hold something for everyone. This book has been out long enough, that you will probably be able to pick it up at the library. So lose yourself in a book this summer and join us on July 30th. We hope to provide an interesting, fun discussion in which we can share our own insights. We plan to meet on the fifth Friday of those months that have 5 Fridays (Oct. 29th). If you have any questions, contact Melanie at 294-1353.

Soaring Sounds

Imagine a symphony orchestra and ballet troupe sharing an extremely large stage. They perform an elaborate show with classical, jazz, and popular music; precision choreography; clever sets and beautiful costumes; and expansive sound. Imagine the show is so big it has to be performed on a stage 100 yards wide by 50 yards deep - an outdoor stage! And imagine the instruments to be all specially designed to produce a big outdoor sound. Finally, imagine 8 such orchestra and dance troupes performing in competition, each with a 15 minute show they've been perfecting all year. It is pageantry at its best.

Such is the annual drum and bugle corps competition held each August at Centerville High School featuring corps from all over the US and Canada. These corps are actually incorporated summer youth programs providing musical training and travel for musicians aged 14-21. Most corps number around 125 performers. These are not "bands" in the college sense, but precision performing units that spend all summer perfecting one elaborate show. "Bugles" are any brass instrument played horizontally (including lateral sousaphones) and "drums" are complete percussion ensembles (including vibraphones and timpani) spread across the width of the stands.

'IAers have been attending these events for 10 years and we will again this summer. Soaring Sounds 20 will be held on Tuesday, August 3rd, at 7 PM at the Centerville HS Stadium Tickets are $14 each benefiting the CHS Music Program.. The show will feature the Blue Devils, Cadets of Bergen County, Crossmen, Mandarins, Carolina Crown, Pioneer, Troopers and Cincinnati Glory. Tickets must be ordered through Don at 429-5595 by June 20th so that we may get good seats. Ask anyone of us who have attended before; it is a show like no other you will see in your life!

Discovering Human Nature"

Why don't we see "road rage" on Maui?  Is each generation becoming more "passive" in its pastimes?  Why is my "ex" so hateful?  Do men bring women to the physical world while women bring men to the spiritual world?

The Human Nature Group may not have the answers, but they have fun with the questions about human behavior and motivation.  Participants are on-the-lookout for interesting examples to discuss with the group and workers, neighbors and K Mart shoppers are providing lots of material!

May's discussion was so lively that no audio or videotape was presented ... participants speculated and laughed their way through the entire hour!

Enjoy the Human Nature group on the second Friday of each month.

Motorcycle Mania

Have you ever ridden on the back of the motorcycle?  Or the front?  Do you own one? Let's gather the IAers who like to ride or who would like to try riding for a day trip.  We'll try to keep one-way travel time around 1 hour for those who have not yet developed motorcyclist's tush.  Both drivers and passengers are welcome.  We are also looking for a participant with a motor home or van. In the past, we've had many more riders sign up than drivers. If we can find a participant with a motor home, the extra riders can travel in it and take turns on the bikes.

Our day trip will probably be to a state park or similar place where we can stretch, hike around, maybe swim, and eat before returning.  We'll probably assemble at the Christopher Club at 12:30.  So far we have four drivers lined up.  Please call Don at 429-5595 to register as either a driver, a rider, or an owner of a motor home.

Back By Popular Demand

Forest View Gardens is one of the most popular and unique restaurants around.  For just the cost of a meal, patrons are treated to continuous entertainment by the finest young singers in the country.

We will be going to forest View gardens for another incredibly enjoyable evening.

On Saturday July 17th we will car pool (leave at 5:15 PM from behind Fazoli's at Sugarcreek Plaza on Wilmington Pike) to Cincinnati to have appetizers and drinks in the beer garden before dinner.

The German-Bavarian food (American will also be available) is marvelous and the beautiful singing voices of the young waiters and waitresses throughout the meal is a treat.  Dinner will be served around 8 PM and afterwards comes the show featuring songs from Gershwin.  The cost (for dinner and the show runs around $12.50 to about $20).

Flyers, which include a partial menu listing, will be available on Friday nights at Interaction's regular Friday meetings held in St. George Episcopal Church.

Reservations are  mandatory and can be placed by calling Ann Marx at 436-3690.
