Big Band Drum Extravaganza, Featuring Columbus Jazz Orchestra

The oldest community supported jazz orchestra in the nation is beginning its 26th concert season, and for over half of those seasons, the Interaction Jazz Group has been attending their concerts. The Columbus Jazz Orchestra presents a regular concert season of 5 programs each year, each program featuring a different guest artist and repertoire, but all featuring their marvelous 18 piece big band. The CJO season's opener will feature the top big band drummers extant. Harold Jones - Count Basie Band and Natalie Cole, Dave Weckel - Buddy Rich Band, and Louie Bellson from about every big band that ever was. The occasion is the annual national convention of percussionists, which happens to be held in Columbus. We will meet at 4 PM on Oct 30th at the Holiday Inn Lobby across from Wright State Univ., carpool to Columbus for dinner, attend the concert, catch dessert at the Hyatt Regency, and arrive back in Dayton around 1 AM. Tickets are $20. Call Myrna at 937-878-6657 by Oct. 15th with your ticket order (you don't need to pay until the night of the concert).

It's Fall, But Not time To Hibernate

Interaction's fun-loving Activities committee sponsors games nights, smoke-free dances, canoe trips, dinner nights and other delights. Some activities, while publicized in the newsletter and in Friday announcements, are the initiatives of individuals who enjoy sharing their interests with Interaction friends. These would include groups carpooling to festivals and concerts, bicycle and motorcycle trips, movie and dining get-togethers, and even overnight adventures like the New Orleans road trip. Singles enjoy these activities because it's not necessary to have a partner, and participants frequently "network" from one enjoyment to the next. For example, some "outdoor types" who enjoyed canoeing and motorcycling together discovered other shared interests that led them to the Ski Club picnic. You have so many opportunities to share good times with good friends, to "go with the program" ... or to introduce your own and invite Interaction friends along. Make the most of it!

Road Trip To Self-Discovery

On Saturday October 16th, some seekers of self-knowledge will rise very early for a road trip to "Enneagram Basics" in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Trinity English Lutheran Church is offering a day long workshop beginning at 10 AM (Ohio time). This introduction to the enneagram personality system will allow participants to identify their own personality type and learn, in a compassionate and frequently comical presentation, to appreciate the different worldviews of other people.

The plan is to carpool from Dayton, leaving at 7 am to allow for driving time. When the workshop ends sometime after 5 PM, most of the newly-enneagrammed group will enjoy the Munchie Emporium, a delightful eclectic restaurant with live entertainment, and spend the night in Fort Wayne, returning to Dayton on Sunday the 17th.

No prior knowledge of the enneagram or psychology is required for this beginners' workshop. The cost is $35, which includes a box lunch. Get your registration form from Rick Lab on any Friday (or call 5 13-746-5930, or e-mail labrgsquared.com). And if you haven't tried the Human Nature (enneagram) Group, please join us for amusing videos and enneagram commentary on October 8th.

Human Nature Group

You could argue that human nature is the best understood... or least understood... topic for discussion. Examine any proverb or quotation, or a classic scene from the movies, and you are examining people and their behavior. In the Human Nature Discussion Group, you are invited to pose questions about behavior you have observed and offer your thoughts about whatever heartwarming, aggravating or quirky examples are under discussion.

People are funny, and you can appreciate that on the second Friday of each month. Join us on Oct. 8th and Nov. 12th for this group.

Women's Group: Simple Abundance

October asks us to become curators of our own contentment. This month deliberately cultivates the habit of being: a heightened awareness of Real Life's abundance. The habit of being is a graceful appreciation for the good continuously surrounding us, no matter what our circumstances might be today. Once you commit to cultivating the habit of being, nothing in your daily round will lack meaning because you'll discover that the meaning has always been within you.

September's Simple Abundance group coaxed us to think about our gifts and the work we here created to do. As we give thanks for our gifts, we realize that the same power that gifted us with our dreams knows how to help make them come true. Our aspirations are our possibilities. The Simple Abundance group for women is based on Sara Ban Breathnach's book. This book outlines the six principles of Gratitude, Simplicity, Order, harmony, Beauty and Joy as well as gives us invaluable wisdom for our everyday lives. Even though you need not be reading the book to attend, we hope you will be moved to do so after becoming acquainted with it. Simple Abundance has 366 evocative essays - one for every day of the year - written for women who wish to live by their own lights.

Ladies Book Club

Attention all ladies who have always wanted to participate in a book club. We had a great discussion during our last meeting on July 30th. Our next book club meeting will be on Oct. 29th and the current book we are reading is "Mother Of Pearl" (Hyperion, $23.95). by Melinda Haynes. This book was yet another Oprah Winfrey pick.. This book has been out long enough, that you will probably be able to pick it up at the library. It is also available in audio - both abridged and unabridged. So lose yourself in a book this summer and join us on October 29th. We hope to provide an interesting, fun discussion in which we can share our own insights. We plan to meet on the fifth Friday of those months that have 5 Fridays. If you have any questions, contact Melanie at 294-1353.

Chicken Soup Group

Would you like to occasionally be a part of a discussion group that is facilitated, but the discussion topics come from the interests of the members that night? Where members would share from their hearts mostly and not always their heads, and you could bring up an idea you'd like to hear other single adults perspectives of in a gentle and respectful way. Or maybe you have no specific concerns, but would like to show support for fellow singles in a caring way. You may find the Chicken Soup Group just the place to be on the first Friday of each month. There will be no meets in Oct. or Nov. Interaction will be on the road.

Human Nature: Applying The Enneagram

This discussion group has a practical purpose: learning about yourself and others, using the enneagram model of human personality. Participants are asked to read about the enneagram, in preparation for applying its principles to people's interactions. You don't have to read a book to participate in this group but, when you realize how "on target" this system can be and how much fun it can be to learn, you'll want to know more. Recommended introductory reading: The Enneagram Made Easy - Cartoons and Comedy make this an enjoyable text and a convenient quick reference. The Enneagram: Understanding Yourself and Others - Most people can recognize their own type by reading the first-person descriptions contained in this book. The Enneagram In Love and Work - How the enneagram types relate romantically and professionally, a practical guide. Join us on October 8th and November 12th for this discussion.

Peddling Pedaling

An old Interaction tradition continues this year with the return of our weekly bicycle excursions. Come join your IA friends for a healthy and enjoyable bike ride every Saturday morning, June through September. We will meet at the Carillon Bell Tower on Patterson Blvd., near the NCR complex and the Dayton Marriot Hotel. Our trip will take us to Sara Jane's on the south edge of Miamisburg for lunch, and then return to the Bell Tower. The trip normally lasts about three hours.  Please be ready to leave at 10 AM from the parking strip across the access road from the Bell Tower. We will go every Saturday that the temperature is above 50 degrees at 9 AM and there is no rain forecast.

Please contact Joe at 837-0751 by 9:15 AM if you have any questions.

Will Computers Outsmart Us?

On Friday October 15th, the topic will be nothing less than the future of humankind in the 21st century. Our discussion will center around the chilling but optimistic predictions of Ray Kurzweil, the "Thomas Edison of the Cyberworld". The astonishing predictions of this inventor and futurist will be revealed and discussed.

Your facilitator will introduce ideas from Kurzweil's book "The Age Of Spiritual Machines: When computers Exceed Human Intelligence", and let the discussion proceed. Will there be self-replicating machines, microprocessors implanted in our bodies, medical miracles and radically-different ways of working, learning and living? Join our speculation about how we may merge with our technology ... within your own lifetime.
